Commemorating Black Ribbon Day: Honoring the Victims of Totalitarian Regimes

News - Intro image

VICTORIA - The Canadian Polish Congress BC hosted a poignant and deeply moving Black Ribbon Day remembrance ceremony at the Legislative Assembly in Victoria. This annual event serves as a solemn tribute to the countless victims of communism and Nazism, ensuring that their suffering and sacrifices are never forgotten.

The ceremony featured powerful speeches from distinguished guests, including the Honourable Raj Chouhan, Speaker of the Legislature, the Consul General of Poland in Vancouver, Ms. Aleksandra Kucy, and Mr. Algis Jaugelis, a representative of the Lithuanian community of BC. Their words reinforced the importance of remembrance and vigilance against the resurgence of oppressive ideologies.

A particularly moving moment came when Mr. George Plawski, author of Never a Dull Moment: A Memoir of Canadian Naval Aviation, Firebombing and Theatre, shared his personal experiences of life under Nazi rule and his family’s harrowing escape from communist-occupied Poland. His story served as a powerful reminder of the resilience of those who endured totalitarian regimes and the importance of preserving their histories for future generations.

During the event, CPC BC Acting President, Mr. Konrad Kobielewski, unveiled the official Black Ribbon Day Proclamation. He also took the opportunity to advocate for greater representation of the Polish-Canadian community in the consultation process for British Columbia’s new Holocaust education curriculum. Set to become mandatory for high school students in 2025, this curriculum presents a crucial opportunity to provide a comprehensive and inclusive account of historical events, including the significant experiences of Polish victims of both Nazi and Soviet oppression.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia and all of our guests who joined us in this important act of remembrance. Together, we honor the victims of tyranny, reaffirm our commitment to truth and education, and stand united against hatred and oppression.
