Our History

The BC chapter of the Congress has a proud legacy, dating back to its founding on November 11, 1950. Led by visionaries such as lawyer Jakub Chaim Kaliski and Prince Włodzimierz Czetwertyński, the chapter began with member organizations like the Polish Friendship “Zgoda” Society and the Polish Combatants Association. These pioneers laid the foundation for a vibrant community, committed to preserving Polish identity while contributing to Canadian society.

Over the decades, the Congress in BC has championed freedom, tradition, and connection. Key achievements include:
•    The Polish Community Centre: In 1957, members of the Congress laid the foundation for the Polish Hall on Fraser Street, built as a symbol of unity and a hub for cultural preservation. 
•    Education Initiatives: Under the leadership of figures like Jakub Kaliski, the Congress laid the groundwork for Polish language studies at the University of British Columbia and supported Polish schools, driven by dedicated volunteers, particularly from the Federation of Polish Women in Canada.
•    Care for Seniors: In 1970, recognizing the needs of an aging population, the Congress spearheaded the creation of Copernicus Lodge, a home for seniors that reflects the community's values of care and dignity.
•    Media Representation: With radio programs like Polish Wave at the Pacific in the 1980s and the first Polish-language broadcasts on multicultural TV in BC in 1981, and the printed CPC Bulletin, the Congress amplified the voice of Polish Canadians.
•    Support for Refugees: In the 1980s, the Congress provided critical aid to Polish refugees, collecting donations, organizing social assistance, and advocating for Solidarity in Poland.

Recent accomplishments of the BC chapter exemplify this ongoing dedication:
•    Through proactive engagement with local governments, we have successfully secured official recognition of Polonia Day (May 2) and Polish Heritage Month (May) in cities across British Columbia. This recognition not only strengthens our community’s visibility but also provides opportunities to educate the public about Poland’s rich history and traditions.
•    We proudly play a role in organizing and supporting the annual Young Polonia Leadership Summit, held in Ottawa. This event brings together emerging Polish-Canadian leaders from across the country to discuss community engagement, leadership development, and the future of Polonia in Canada. Through inspiring discussions, networking sessions, and direct engagement with policymakers, we empower young Polish-Canadians to take an active role in shaping our community’s future.
•    In 2024 we welcomed Polish President Andrzej Duda and First Lady Agata Kornhauser-Duda to Vancouver. This historic visit underscored the deep and enduring ties between Poland and Canada. During their stay, the President and First Lady met with members of the Polish-Canadian community, recognizing the contributions of Polish immigrants to Canada’s development. The visit also strengthened diplomatic and economic relations while reinforcing Poland’s ongoing support for its diaspora.

These successes would not be possible without the tireless efforts of our volunteers and the generosity of our donors. With seven current member organizations and more joining soon, the Congress in BC continues to grow, innovate, and inspire.
